Camping With Kids
One of my favorite things to do during the summer is to go camping. Get away from technology. Get your kids off of their tablets or gaming systems and get some fresh air. I promise they won't die. In fact, they might actually enjoy themselves. Here are some tips for camping with kids.
1. Find the Right Campsite
Don't go straight into the woods and rough it when you have children. Find a campsite with bathrooms nearby. Some have playgrounds and beaches as well. You can slowly work your way up to more remote camping.
UseĀ http://Recreation.gov to find a campsite that fits your needs. This site allows you to filter by amenities or activities.
2. Plan Activities
Bring your bikes or plan a short nature walk. Some camp grounds even have canoe or kayak rentals. Bring some board games and be ready when your kids say "I'm bored."
3. Organize Gear
There's nothing worse than not being able to find what you need because it's a cluttered mess. Use clear totes to keep kitchen supplies, tents, sleeping bags and other camping equipment separate. Use a camping checklist to make sure you don't forget any essentials.
4. Be Positive
Be EXCITED! There are going to be challenges. There always is with family trips. Lead by example by having a positive attitude when challenges arise so your kids will want to go camping again and again.
5. Be Safe
Once you get set up set safety rules. Talk about what they should do if they get lost. What are the boundaries? Are they allowed to leave the camp site alone? Are they allowed near water? Are they allowed to go to the bathroom by themselves? Make sure you bring a first aid kit, flashlight and a whistle.
I hope you all have a wonderful camping trip and remember to HAVE FUN!!
